Doctor Who The Movie - 20th Anniversary

20 Years ago today on British television in 1996, Sylvester McCoy handed the Tardis key over to a new man, a real life friend of his, called Paul McGann.

   

The TV Movie was watched by 9 million viewers in the UK.

Over the years, it's probably been viewed as a film you either liked or hated. It revealed that the Doctor was [supposedly] half-human, which would explain why we Human's and our home world is his favourite species and planet to always visit [perhaps way too much]. It began the Doctor's kissing routine, which went on in the new series, beginning with the 9th Doctor kissing Rose in order to remove the power of the Time Vortex from her body and into himself, and introduced the first totally redesigned Tardis interior, with the time rotor of the Tardis console fixed to the ceiling for the very first time, as would become the norm for every new series version so far of the console room.

The film was hoped to be successful at the time in both Britain and America, but since it failed in terms of audience figures in the USA, a new series never arrived . . well . . until almost 10 years later

But if anything, the TV Movie 20 years ago proved 2 things. That people was still very interested in Doctor Who, and that there was still an audience who wanted the show back.

The BBC trailer for the film said at the time 'his back, and it's about time'. But while the Doctor was indeed back for just one night only in 1996, at least he did come back for the new series beginning in 2005, where since then his been back . . . . . . . . FOR GOOD !!.
